Summer Days…Driftin’ Away

July 28, 2009 | Contributor: Alyssa Schwenk

So. This is our — mine, Nicole’s, Ben’s, and Melissa’s — last week as interns at the U.S. Public Service Academy. The way the time flew has been incredible! It’s been an exhilarating summer in D.C. in terms of what we’ve simply been able to observe. From stalking motorcades to debating what the Blue Dogs will do next to enjoying intern happy hours, we’ve had a great time.

We’re also extremely proud of our work at the Academy. Ben has hustled up and down the Hill seeking co-sponsors for the bill; Nicole has called probably every foundation, military leader, and college in the United States; I can rattle off newspaper contact info like nobody’s business; and Melissa has contacted countless potential donors.

All in all, we’ve added about a dozen co-sponsors, several endorsements, and written many letters to the editor and op-eds, and received donations. We’ve worked hard to spread the message and increase support for the Academy. This summer has been tough–yes, Congress has been active, but most of the energy has been directed toward those two monoliths: energy and healthcare reform. It’s been difficult to gain the necessary momentum and attention for passage, but we’re nevertheless hugely proud of what the Academy’s accomplished this summer.

Think we can do more? Send us a message and get involved!

One YACer’s Story

July 22, 2009 | Contributor: Melissa Goldberg

Maryland YACer Chris Jennison came to lobby Maryland’s Senators with Chris, Shawn, Ben (Government Affairs Intern), and I.

Hi Everyone!

I am a YACer for the state of Maryland. I recently had the opportunity to meet up with staffers for Senator Mikulski and Senator Cardin. Luckily, they both quickly restated their support for the Academy, and the rest of the meetings consisted of brainstorming ideas to gather some more support.

During the meeting, we discussed the possibility of getting more organizations to not only endorse the Academy, but also to contact the Representatives and Senators of the states in which they are based and ask those Congressional leaders to take a more proactive stand on the issue.

I myself have a few friends in the staffs of the United States Coast Guard Academy and United States Merchant Marine Academy, so I’m going to be in touch with them and ask them to reach out to the Senators in Connecticut and New York.

As far as what each of you can do, if you have any connections or are friendly with those in positions of power at larger organizations and institutions, email them or give them a call. Discuss the Academy with them again, share a few updates on the legislative status of the Academy, and then ask them if they would be willing to contact their Senators and Representatives. If these politicians are asked by influential constituents to express their support and take a leading role, we hope that they can help generate more momentum for the Academy.

Keep working hard to support the Academy!

Respectfully,
Chris Jennison
Maryland YACer

Steps toward Success

July 17, 2009 | Contributor: Alyssa Schwenk

Nicole Trinh, our education and outreach intern phenom, spent part of the week at the 80 Million Strong Conference. At the conference, the creation of a Public Service Academy was deemed the number-one public-service project in terms of importance for young people. At the conference, which several Academy supporters attended, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar endorsed the Academy!  Here’s what Nicole had to say:

It’s been a great week for Outreach at the Academy this week! I was lucky enough to join 75+ young Americans at the 80 Million Strong Summit on Capitol Hill. Now what exactly is the 80MS Summit? Take some of the most passionate individuals from all over the country, put them in a room for 12 hours, and then let them go at solving our nation’s biggest problems.  What’s the outcome of that?—a unified list of incredible policy recommendations to present to Congress.  Take note: these recommendations addressed everything from healthcare, education, climate, to national security. There was hardly any ground that wasn’t covered.

Now the highlight of the Summit was when each attendee prioritized each policy recommendation on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the most important). Believe it or not, out of the hundreds of proposed policies, establishing a U.S. Public Service Academy came out at the very top—the only recommendation to receive a 9-rating! That’s right. At least 75 millennial generation leaders believed that establishing a Public Service Academy would be the best way to solve our national crises. I could not agree more.

And when I thought it couldn’t get any better, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar endorsed our effort at the Summit. During the Q&A portion I asked him point blank if he would support the Academy effort. Without hesitation,  he said “yes” and reinforced our belief that now is the time to get more young people involved in government, now is the time to strengthen our public sector, now is the time to build the U.S. Public Service Academy. Onward!
