Last Week

April 21, 2009 | Contributor: Mark Dlugash

This is my last week at the Academy and I’ve been taking some time to reflect on what I’ve learned.  The most amazing thing I have seen is the persistence of Chris Myers Asch.  This is a man who does not give up.  Whether meeting with congressional representatives and staffers for the nth time, or speaking at another event to support the Academy, or responding to bloggers, there is an optimistic, indefatiguable quality that is apparent.  It reminds me a great deal of Sargent Shriver, who envisioned and led the Peace Corps and also founded Head Start, Vista, Upward Bound, the Special Olympics, and more, ultimately receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work.

I have also been amazed by the dedication of college and high school students to making the Academy a reality.  Young people want to serve their country and they want their government to be effective.

Students See the Career Paths Shifting

April 20, 2009 | Contributor: Justine Hebron

For those who continue to remain skeptical at the need for an undergraduate  academy to train civilians in government and public service jobs, look no further than Steve Lohr’s article in the New York Times.  With applications to graduate schools of public policy and government nearing all time highs, the need for a complimentary undergraduate flagship institution is highlighted.  Students and citizens alike realize the time is now to be part of the solution to our country’s challenges and that government and public service is the career path to take.  Please read the article and get involved in making the US Public Service Academy a reality.

Obama Family Dog Endorses Academy

April 15, 2009 | Contributor: Mark Dlugash

WASHINGTON — In an unanticipated move, the Obama dog who has captivated the nation has endorsed the U.S. Public Service Academy.  The pooch has been making a sensation across the world, making a splash in Britain, racing through the White House, and bowling over the White House Press Corps.  Sources close to the curly-haired black-and-white Portuguese water dog describe his support for the Academy as “adorable and frenetic.”  The move was announced early Wednesday after Bo was found dashing through the White House wearing the Academy t-shirt, knocking over chairs and escaping into the Rose Garden.  No word yet on Michelle’s tomatoes.
